Skills academy is a smash hit
FOOTBALL stars of the future picked up some soccer skills at Macclesfield’s Grosvenor Centre.
The day – which was hailed a roaring success by organisers – saw a shop unit at the busy mall turned into a mini football academy for youngsters by youth coaches from Macclesfield Town FC.
And on hand to help the children with some penalty shoot outs, target skill practice and chip-in-thebin sessions was club mascot Roary the Lion.
Ed Kennedy, Grosvenor Centre manager, said: “This has been a great event, and I am looking forward to the next session.
“We are always looking for activities to help keep the children busy during the summer months and so a link-up with Maccles- field Town FC seemed a perfect partnership. The boys and girls who came along were kept busy – they all loved meeting Roary the Lion as well. I’ve been very impressed with the talents on show, and by the help from the Community Sports Trust at Macclesfield Town FC.”
Chris Hames, Macclesfield Town sport development officer, said there’s a growing interest in the game among youngsters thanks to June’s World Cup.
He said: “There has definitely been more interest thanks to the games in Brazil, even if England didn’t do that well. We’ve seen an increase in youngsters getting out and enjoying more sports this summer. There was a great turn out for the session at the Grosvenor Centre, and it was a good chance to let parents know about what we can offer children to help them get interested in sports.
“We want to nurture youngsters – both boys and girls – so they will develop either into the players of the future, in a decade from now, or a committed football fan. Because we need both for Macclesfield Town to continue to be successful.
“There’s been a big demand for women’s and girls’ football, and so from September we will be starting after-school sessions for girls, aged six to 11, at Macclesfield Academy. We are looking to develop a girls only team plus a mixed team.”
Girls interested in the after-school sessions can find more details at macclesfieldtowncst.org. uk or call Chris on 01625 264688.
