A POYNTON football team are celebrating a successful season despite narrowly missing out on the title.

Poynton Junior Football Club under 12s, pictured, came in as runners-up in Division 1 of the Stockport Metro League by only one point.

And having won the league last season, the team were happy to again come within a hair’s breadth of retaining their title.

The squad of young football stars never dropped out of the top two of the league for the entire season and were top of the league at Christmas.

Punk Takiar, the team’s head coach, said: “It was neck and neck right through the season with Poynton eventually losing out by just one point to rivals Droylsden.”

Despite missing out Punk said it was another great season for his troop, who throughout the season played 18 games altogether, winning 15 and losing only three.

Poynton were also the league’s leading scorers for the second year running, scoring a total of 58 goals, and also did well in their summer tournaments, getting to two semi-finals and one quarter-final.

Punk added: “This was a much tougher season, with some very tough competition. It was great taking the championship right into the last week, and disappointing to lose by such a narrow margin.

“However, the boys can be extremely proud to be winners and runners-up in their first two seasons at 11-a-side.With a couple of new recruits, we should be even stronger next season.”
