Promising signs in friendly win
GILES Heagerty’s first game as Macclesfield’s head coach ended in a victory as the Blues were 34-26 victors over Caldy.
After a forward pass saw their first score chalked off Tom Eaton put Josh Fowles in to score.
But Caldy hit back to make it 5-5 at the 10-minute mark.
The Blues scored a stunning try when Matt King set Ollie Fewtrell on a run and he offloaded for Jonny Kenny to cross for a 12-5 lead.
Elliott Brierley’s try, coupled with a penalty, made it 22-5 but Caldy got back into contention just before the break, touching down out wide for a 22-12 scoreline.
A try shortly after the restart brough them to within three points of their hosts, and another try put Caldy in the lead.
After Caldy lost a man to a yellow card prop Elliot Mills’ try put Macc back in the lead and when Chris Jones (right) completed the scoring with a catch-and-drive try at a lineout that made the final score 34-26 in a decent off-season outing.
