Macclesfield Express - - MOTORS - CHESS GEOFF LAWRENCE

MACCLESFIELD Chess Club’s A team may have been relegated when they lost their final game of last season’s Stockport League, but they’ve shown great determination to bounce back at the first attempt.

With six matches of the new season played – all won – they topped Division Two by seven points ahead of the Christmas period.

Results have included 6-0 and 4-2 wins against Denton, 3.5-2.5 against Marple, 5.5-0.5 against Stockport, 5-1 against East Cheshire and 4-2 against Altrincham.

Top board Robert Shaw has won all his games, as have Phil Cattermole and captain John-Paul Taylor.

Macclesfield also cruised into the semi-final of the Charnley Cup with a convincing win against Wilmslow.

In the Stoke League, last season’s champions currently occupy third place but are only a point off the leading teams from Cheddleton.

They drew with Newcastle, lost to one of the Cheddleton teams but beat the other and have a win over Holmes Chapel.
