Jamie teeing up for a Major year
RYDER Cup hero Jamie Donaldson has won his fourth straight Welsh Tour Proferssional of the Year after a glorious 2014, and he’s targeting a Major impact this year.
Donaldson’s brilliant Ryder Cup debut saw him seal victory for Europe at Gleneagles as well as hit his all-time highest world ranking of 24th.
All of which made the Pontypridd-born star the clear winner for the Golf Union of Wales’ award, which he received at another renowned Ryder Cup venue, Celtic Manor.
Donaldson stunned the Americans at Gleneagles, winning three points for Europe including his singles victory over Keegan Bradley, courtesy of an almost-perfect 146yard wedge at the 15th.
And the 39-year-old says he aims to maintain his record of climbing the rankings, a feat he’s continued to achieve since putting his career-threatening back problems behind him in 2008.
Macclesfield- based Donaldson, who finished fourth in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, will no doubt be eyeing success in Major tournaments to add to his three European Tour successes.
“I have steadily improved my rankings every year, so that continues to be the main goal for 2015,” he revealed. “But I will also be basing my schedule around the four Majors and trying to improve my record in those.
“I would undoubtedly like to get off to a quick start and carry on exactly where I left off in 2014.
“In 2013 it was great to win early due to the fact I gained confidence from the victory and it undoubt- edly helped me to carry that kind into the rest of the season.
“It is getting harder to improve my rankings, fourth in the Race to Dubai does not leave a lot of room, but my world ranking is 24 so there is a bit I can do there.”
