FOOTBALL squad who lost 20 games in a row has missed out on winning a competition to be named the worst in the UK.

Poynton British Legion FC B-team were finalists in restaurant Flaming Grill’s ‘Flaming Failures’ competition.

But they missed out the chance to play in a special play-off for a £1,000 prize after a public vote.

Poynton put themselves forward after drawing their first game and losing the next 20 while competing in the Macclesfield and Stockport 11-a-side league last season.

The only two games the players ever won was during pre-season, when

Athey beat two teams made up of teenagers.

The team’s goalkeeper Adam Clancy, of Copperfield Road, Poynton, said: “Conceding every single week, we can’t remember our last clean sheet.

“Even when we play at our very best, we still can’t score a goal. We regularly get thumped six or seven-nil, and in one match we lost by about 13 goals.”

The team are currently not playing and had hoped the £1,000 prize money and exposure would give them a boost to start again next season.
