STARTING the season against promoted Cheadle, new Alderley Edge captain Adam Worrall’s decision to bat first was soon justified as openers Alan Day and Calum Rowe put on close to a hundred partnership at four an over before Day was dismissed for 47.

After this, Cheshire batsman Rowe totally dominated the innings.

He found good support from Mark Currie (32) and Charlie Reid (30 not out), but was at the crease for all but one ball of the permitted 55 overs and finished with a quite outstanding 137.

Tight bowling from Alderley’s fourpronged seam attack quickly made it clear that the home team’s score of 281-5 would be well beyond Cheadle’s capabilities – the only question was whether Alderley could get all 10 wickets and force a victory.

A stubborn half century from Bullock suggested that Cheadle might hang on for a draw, but then Australian left-arm spinner Sean Sturrock bamboozled the lower order with his many variations, taking 5-42 as Cheadle were all out for 137 in the 45th over.

Unfortunately the 2nd XI suffered almost diametrically opposite fortunes on the opening day, being bowled out for just 53 by Cheadle who went on to record a 6-wicket victory.
