The event was organised by Macclesfield Rotary Club and saw seven teams battling it out for an intermediate and senior place in the final round of the competition.

Topics ranged from ‘The Value of Women’, ‘Individuality’, ‘Power of speech’ and ‘The Watchful Eye of the Media’. The teams were from All Hallows, James Bateman Junior High School, Biddulph, St Nicholas CHS from Northwich, Biddulph High School, and Brine Leas High School Nantwich.

The Intermediate winner was St Nicholas and the Senior winner was All Hallows Macclesfield.

This team of Rachel, Ben and Emily spoke on ‘The Freedom of Speech’ discussing equality, rights and responsibilities and that young people must not feel disengaged. Ben also scooped the individual best speaker award.

Eric Cowcill, the Rotary Youth Speaks organiser, said: ‘‘Competitions like this play a very important part in enabling young people to develop their voice.”
