Linda’s marathon at 60 in aid of hospice
A FITNESS trainer ran her first marathon aged 60 in aid of the hospice which cared for her mum.
Linda Rowlands is a trainer at the Fitness4All gym in Bollington which is run by her family. But it wasn’t until the age of 60 that she decided it was time to run a marathon.
Linda, who’s lived in Bollington for 30 years, chose to run the Manchester Marathon in aid of East Cheshire hospice, where her mum Ruth Kenyon spent the last days before she died from cancer last year, And it was an impressive first effort at the race, with Linda completing the run in a time of 4 hours 43 minutes.
Linda said: “I did the Macclesfield Half Marathon and thought how bad could a whole one be? Well at 60 years of age doing my first ever marathon, and last ever, proved to be one of the most difficult challenges I’ve had.
“But it was a great experience and absolutely worth the hours I spent training for it.
“The generosity of those who sponsored me has been amazing and East Cheshire Hospice will be receiving some much needed money.
“Every pound I received really helped to spur me on.
“After my mum spent her last days in the hospice I knew I wanted to do something to help this amazing place.”
Linda has raised more then £1,500 for the hospice, which needs thousands of pounds every day to keep running. It cares for people from Bollington, Macclesfield, Poynton, Wilmslow and other towns and villages around the area at the end of their lives.
The family has run other events at the gym to support the charity.
Linda’s son Chris, who manages Fitness4All, said: “I’m so proud of my mum running her first marathon, aged 60 and in such a great time.
“I went down with my family and watched and it was a really good atmosphere.
“She’s raised over £1500 for the hospice which cared for my grandmother and if anyone can spare a donation it will be greatly appreciated.”
