Group take on 1k cycle ride
A GROUP of cyclists are pedalling their way across Britain to raise money for a community programme.
Oliver Gibson, Tom Wardle, Tim Sparks and Jonathan Aiken will be cycling just shy of 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in May.
They hope to raise £3,000 for Cre8, a youth and community programme which works with children and young people on the Moss estate in Macclesfield.
The project the group are fundraising for teaches bike repairing and also provides music-based activities and qualifications for children who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity.
Over the past few months the gang have been training hard in a bid to complete the LEJOG in 12 days, cycling around 80 miles a day.
The ride will take place from May 23 to June 6.
Family and friends are acting as support crew along the way and are organising accommodation and food along the route.
The riders will be stopping for one night in Macclesfield as part of the ride - and will be having a home cooked meal and a night in their own beds before continuing on their way.
The riders are paying for everything themselves so every penny they raise will go straight to Cre8.
So far the group have raised more than £500.
Tom Wardle has called for the town for help.
He said: “The donations have started trickling in but we need to get a huge tidal wave going to support our ride.
“Cre8 is about making change happen, being in community, and having fun while we’re doing it.
“We provide projects and activities for young people and their families. Our work is aimed towards empowering young people and adults in the local area to make change happen for themselves and also for their local neighbourhood.
“All the money raised will go directly to Cre8; to help young people do things like fix and ride bikes, have music lessons, perform in a concert, write their own songs - things they wouldn’t otherwise get to do.”
Cre8 is based at St Barnabas Church on Lyme Avenue, on the Moss, and provides activities for young people including music tuition, cycling, cooking, arts and crafts and education.
