Band aims to get park in tune for summer
ABRASS band enthusiast is hoping to bring back a summer of family concerts to a town band stand.
Louise Renshaw, who is the chair and musical director of Macclesfield Youth Brass Band (MYBB), wants to organise a series if free concerts to be held at the band stand at South Park and is hoping it will become a must-attend event for families on sunny afternoons.
She has applied for funding through Aviva’s community funding scheme and is urging residents to vote in her favour and help her attain a £2,000 grant towards a series of concerts in 2016.
Louise said: “People love a brass band and it’s a great family day out. They bring their own chairs and blankets and a picnic - last year people even brought gazebos - and it’s a really nice family afternoon out.”
The grant will enable Louise to secure a series of 10 concerts and will go towards paying for bands, the promotion and administration of the events.
Louise added: “We want it to become a familiar thing again. We want people to say ‘lets go down to the park today, there might be a band on’, and have a familiarity with the event. There are a couple of concerts a year on the band stand, but it is too often left silent, so it will be nice to bring it back to life.
“It’s got great acoustics and South Park is so well kept it is a shame not to get more people to use it.”
Louise is hoping to team up and run the events with S: Park a social enterprise company set up by volunteers at the park, who will help with manning the car parks and the events on the day.
Pete Thompson, chair of S:Park, added: “We believe that there should be more going on - events in the park with the pavilion providing facilities and services - and the concert series would be a huge boost for us and the ten thousand people who live within a mile of the park.”
Getting the funding is simply a race to get the most votes, so the band is encouraging everyone in Macclesfield and in the wider music community to play their part and help make it happen.
Go to community-fund. aviva.co.uk search for Macclesfield Youth Brass Band to vote. Voting ends 30 May 2015.
Macclesfield Youth Brass Band will be giving a flavour of things to come with a special performance at the Treacle Market on Sunday, June 28.
