Stylish charity day from Styal
STYAL Golf Club were again proud hosts of the annual charity day supporting the worthy cause of the East Cheshire Hospice.
It was the 15th year of the event and it again attracted a bumper field of 39 teams of four – men, ladies and mixed.
Once more the main organiser was Styal Golf Club stalwart and former Lady Captain Sue Forster.
Sue said: “My thanks go again to Styal Golf Club for hosting the event and to all those who helped in so many ways both on and off the course.
“There were numerous compliments for the new holes at the club and the revised lay out of the course and we hope to raise in the region of £2,600 on the day through entry fees, raffles etc and we were lucky to have good weather for the event.
”The competition provided a close finish with three teams locked on 95 points and getting the nod in the cpo were Clare Maxwell, Jane Bamford, Linda Sandells and Carolyn Eadsforth.”
A Wednesday Stableford at Styal needed a cpo on 38 points to take Mark Window into top spot from Mike Wright and Steve Massey.
The Higham Cup is a top ‘major’ at Styal and Simon Suhr-Henriksen needed a cpo on 40 points to shake off Dave Taylor to claim the coveted trophy.
A junior Roll Up at Styal had Charlie Watts as a clear winner with 25 points from Erin Parker 20 and Daniel Hayes 19.
Macclesfield’s men played for the ACE Oil Trophy and in a tight finish Vin Thomas won a cpo on 66 from Michael Hehir and Peter Mottershead with Rick Ward having the best gross of 76.
Macc ladies played a PIG BB qualifier and clear winners with 41 points were Alycia Sutton and Sheila Greenwood from Judy Mutter and Sue Orwin.
Mixed action at Macc had Rob and Jill Higgins combining to win at a canter with 44 points, four more than Michael Oakes and Alycia Sutton with Rod Price winning the nearest the pin prize.
The popular Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall saw Janet Gates gain bragging rights over the men with her 34-pointer seeing her on top by one point from Don Farquaharson, Mike Gates and Charles Edwin Green.
Davenport ladies played a singles Stableford which doubled up as a Beswick qualifier and the Grandma’s Trophy.
Top of the divisions were Jane Hall 38 points, Muriel Quigley 39 and Christine Deacon 38.
The midweek medal at Mottram Hall was won by John Delaney with 71 from Alan Clark 72 and Nigel Woods 73.
Alderley Edge’s men played round two of the Hospital Trophy and it was led in by Tom Troup with a stunning nett 60 from Sean Hall 67.
But was not enough to clinch the trophy for Sean as added to his opening round of 84 it gave him a two-round total of 144 well behind Sean Hall 132 and Steven Yakub 136.
A medal for Edge’s ladies was won by Olwen Davies with 75 from Madeline Kubiak 76 and Julie Ricketts 78.
Didsbury Golf Club are introducing a beginner package called ‘Ladies Give Golf A Go’.
The package includes five lessons with England and Cheshire coach Peter Barber, golf equipment for the package and also ‘tee and cakes’ at open events on June 21 and June 23.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance is the only organisation of its kind in the country to run knock out competitions for its 114 member clubs.
As well as the Dunham Forest Trophy, the City Glass Men’s Foursomes and the Archie Preston Trophy for Mixed Foursomes the Alliance also runs a very competitive Junior Team KO sponsored by Williams BMW and the Seniors (o55 years) KO which is now in its second year and going from strength to strength.
In round two the draw for our local clubs looking to reach the last 16 is: Styal v Alsager; Davenport v Cheadle and Birchwood v Macclesfield
