Stylish char­ity day from Styal

STYAL Golf Club were again proud hosts of the an­nual char­ity day sup­port­ing the wor­thy cause of the East Cheshire Hospice.

It was the 15th year of the event and it again at­tracted a bumper field of 39 teams of four – men, ladies and mixed.

Once more the main or­gan­iser was Styal Golf Club stal­wart and for­mer Lady Cap­tain Sue Forster.

Sue said: “My thanks go again to Styal Golf Club for host­ing the event and to all those who helped in so many ways both on and off the course.

“There were nu­mer­ous com­pli­ments for the new holes at the club and the re­vised lay out of the course and we hope to raise in the re­gion of £2,600 on the day through en­try fees, raf­fles etc and we were lucky to have good weather for the event.

”The com­pe­ti­tion pro­vided a close fin­ish with three teams locked on 95 points and get­ting the nod in the cpo were Clare Maxwell, Jane Bamford, Linda San­dells and Carolyn Eads­forth.”

A Wed­nes­day Stable­ford at Styal needed a cpo on 38 points to take Mark Win­dow into top spot from Mike Wright and Steve Massey.

The Higham Cup is a top ‘ma­jor’ at Styal and Simon Suhr-Hen­rik­sen needed a cpo on 40 points to shake off Dave Tay­lor to claim the cov­eted tro­phy.

A ju­nior Roll Up at Styal had Char­lie Watts as a clear win­ner with 25 points from Erin Parker 20 and Daniel Hayes 19.

Macclesfield’s men played for the ACE Oil Tro­phy and in a tight fin­ish Vin Thomas won a cpo on 66 from Michael Hehir and Peter Mottershead with Rick Ward hav­ing the best gross of 76.

Macc ladies played a PIG BB qual­i­fier and clear win­ners with 41 points were Aly­cia Sut­ton and Sheila Green­wood from Judy Mut­ter and Sue Or­win.

Mixed ac­tion at Macc had Rob and Jill Hig­gins com­bin­ing to win at a can­ter with 44 points, four more than Michael Oakes and Aly­cia Sut­ton with Rod Price win­ning the near­est the pin prize.

The popular Thurs­day Stable­ford at Shrigley Hall saw Janet Gates gain brag­ging rights over the men with her 34-pointer see­ing her on top by one point from Don Far­qua­har­son, Mike Gates and Charles Ed­win Green.

Daven­port ladies played a sin­gles Stable­ford which dou­bled up as a Beswick qual­i­fier and the Grandma’s Tro­phy.

Top of the di­vi­sions were Jane Hall 38 points, Muriel Quigley 39 and Christine Dea­con 38.

The mid­week medal at Mottram Hall was won by John De­laney with 71 from Alan Clark 72 and Nigel Woods 73.

Alder­ley Edge’s men played round two of the Hos­pi­tal Tro­phy and it was led in by Tom Troup with a stunning nett 60 from Sean Hall 67.

But was not enough to clinch the tro­phy for Sean as added to his open­ing round of 84 it gave him a two-round to­tal of 144 well be­hind Sean Hall 132 and Steven Yakub 136.

A medal for Edge’s ladies was won by Ol­wen Davies with 75 from Made­line Ku­biak 76 and Julie Rick­etts 78.

Dids­bury Golf Club are in­tro­duc­ing a be­gin­ner pack­age called ‘Ladies Give Golf A Go’.

The pack­age in­cludes five lessons with Eng­land and Cheshire coach Peter Bar­ber, golf equip­ment for the pack­age and also ‘tee and cakes’ at open events on June 21 and June 23.

The Manch­ester and Dis­trict Golf Al­liance is the only or­gan­i­sa­tion of its kind in the coun­try to run knock out com­pe­ti­tions for its 114 mem­ber clubs.

As well as the Dun­ham For­est Tro­phy, the City Glass Men’s Four­somes and the Archie Pre­ston Tro­phy for Mixed Four­somes the Al­liance also runs a very com­pet­i­tive Ju­nior Team KO spon­sored by Wil­liams BMW and the Se­niors (o55 years) KO which is now in its sec­ond year and go­ing from strength to strength.

In round two the draw for our lo­cal clubs look­ing to reach the last 16 is: Styal v Al­sager; Daven­port v Chea­dle and Birch­wood v Macclesfield

In the Ju­nior Chal­lenge the draw in round two for our lo­cal clubs is: Macclesfield v Ash­ton-un­der­Lyne, Al­sager v Styal and Daven­port v Crewe.
