School welcomes teachers from the Far East
STUDENTS at Fallibroome Academy have made some new friends who live almost 10,000 miles away.
The school has partnered up with Bukit View High School in Singapore.
The aim is to share the best of each country’s practice and create opportunities for students to undertake joint projects and appreciate each others’ culture.
Peter Rubery, executive principal at the academy, was invited to join a group of National Leaders commissioned by the British Council to establish the partnerships earlier in the year.
Ten Singaporean headteachers visited the UK in November and the English Heads visited Singapore in January in order to undertake school visits and meet Education Ministers and policy makers.
The partnership between Fallibroome and Bukit View High School will involve teacher exchanges and Fallibroome hosted four colleagues from the Singapore School last week.
Peter Rubery said: “We extended the tour to include visits to the four schools in the Fallibroome Trust and our visitors were very impressed by our community of schools.
“Singapore featured at the top of a recent Global ‘league table’ of school performance but they work in a very different context to the UK schools.
“The opportunity for teachers and students to work together will benefit all parties and the opportunity for students to develop their global perspective is very welcome. We are particularly keen to learn about Singaporean methods for teaching maths and they have introduced a policy to broaden their curriculum in order to develop character. There is clearly a huge potential for joint benefit from this exciting project and we are grateful to the British Council for supporting this exchange through their ‘Connecting Classrooms’ funding stream.”
Singapore teachers met with Fallibroome teachers, and the students’ International Council, observed lessons and discussed teaching and assessment methods.
Their visit also coincided with the Learning Brain Europe conference in Salford which Fallibroome organises every two years on behalf of the Silk Teaching School Alliance.
Fallibroome teachers plan to visit Singapore in August.
