Charity members express their feelings though art
MEMBERS of a Macclesfield charity which supports adults with learning disabilities have put together an exhibition to share how they feel within our community.
The exhibition ‘Who Do You See?’ has been drawn by members of Speaking Up Speaking Out’s ‘Parachute’ drop-in organisation, which provides adults with learning disabilities and additional needs with a range of fun activities and opportunities.
Karen Keen, project manager, said the exhibition is the ‘dropperinners’ way of expressing how they feel people look at them. She said: “We thought it was a good time to have the exhibition during Learning Disability Week.
“We asked our dropperinners to do some artwork based on their portrait photograph, and around it we’ve written how they feel.
“We asked our dropperinners if they feel people look at them differently because they have a learning disability and they have said they want to be seen as a person and for people to have more patience with them.
“Some of their replies give you a lot to think about. We’ve used their comments verbatim and it’s very thought provoking.”
The exhibition is on display at St Michael’s church until Sunday, June 28.
Karen added: “It’s quite a thought provoking exhibition. We just want to say this is how people feel. It’s not about upsetting people, it’s just about letting them know how our dropper inners feel, and how easy it is to make it better.”
If you would like to find out more about the charity go along to its open day at the Old Park Lane premises on Thursday, June 18, between 11am and 3pm.
There will be coffee and cake workshops, a display and a photo and video show.
Karen added: “As well as the usual delicious home made cakes, chat, tea and coffee, we want to highlight the contribution our dropper-inners make to their community with their display of ‘Why I’m Great’, art, local and national consultations they have been asked to contribute to, a selection of short films made with our dropper-inners and a Makaton signing workshop and display.
“Everyone is welcome.” It takes place at 25-27 Old Park Lane, Macclesfield.
