Bosley eye top prizes at Yeovil event
THE Tug of War Association National Outdoor Tug of War Championships take place this Saturday in Yeovil with tug of war teams from the area competing for the gold medals in different weight classes.
Wood Treatment Bosley Tug of War Club will be competing at the event and will be looking for the top prizes, with the winning teams earning the right to be invited to represent England at the European Outdoor Tug of War Championships which take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland in September.
Bosley tug of war club will be looking to improve on their performances at the 2014 national championships after winning the bronze medal in the men’s catchweight competition and silver in the 600 kilos competition.
This year, the team will be competing in the mens 560kg, 600kg and 680kg weight classes, and have been competing at weekly events leading up to the event, and have been making finals of different weight classes over the course of the season, and are looking on course to pick up medals again at this year’s national tug of war championships.
“We have been competing well this year, and have improved greatly since last year,” said club secretary Alan Knott.
“We have a young squad, many of who only started competing with us last season, so it is great to be in a position to be challenging for national medals again this year”
“Should we win the national championships this year, then we would be eligible to represent England at the European Tug of War Championships in September, which would be a very special moment for our club as it is the 50th anniversary of the European Tug of War Championships, and Bosley won the first European Tug of War Championship back in 1965, so it would be great if we can get there.”
Tug of war also received a boost this week with the news that Tug of War is a candidate sport for potential inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.
The Tug of War Association are the governing body for tug of war in England and are keen to emphasise the positive side of tug of war as a true team sport that is open and accessible to all.
“Our Association are always looking to encourage new teams and individuals (male and female) of all ages into our sport, so if anyone locally wishes to give tug of war a go, then they should get in touch with us to find out how to join in with a training session.”
