District squad off to a winning start
MACCLESFIELD & District Schools FA recently assembled a district U11 squad and the side got off to a winning start when they took on Chester recently.
Trials were held in March, following which a squad of 12 was selected by coaches Jack Albanese and Alasdair Heathcote.
After a couple of friendlies, the team played Chester Schools in the Cheshire Schools Moors Cup final at Christleton High School.
The contest was played out in persistent rain but both teams played highly skilful football to produce an entertaining game.
Goals from Alex Armstrong and Oliver Holt saw the visitors go 2-1 up before Chester equalised.
Chester then took the lead, only for Macclesfield to gain a deserved equaliser when Armstrong scored a wonderful solo goal with five minutes of the match remaining.
The game ended 3-3 and needed to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
With the shoot-out poised at 12-11, Jack Massey in the Macclesfield goal pulled off a great save to win the game for the visitors.
This was a terrific per- formance against a team which has played all season.
A spokesman said: “We are grateful to the Premier League Grant Scheme which has provided kit for the team and funding.”
Squad: Jack Massey (Upton Priory), Jake Hawtin (Wilmslow Grange), Declan Sutcliffe (Puss Bank), Sally-Ann Hitchin (Gorsey Bank), Jonathan Reed (Marlborough), Mason Hopkins (Marlfields), Charlie Edwards (Hurdsfield), Alex Armstrong (Prestbury), Will Rostron (Vernon), Louis Darricotte (Lower Park), Oliver Holt (Mottram), Steve Heathcote (Upton Priory).
