Women rugby players raise thousands for screening service

WOMEN at Macclesfield RUFC have raised almost £2,000 for breast screening service.

Ladies connected to Macclesfield RUFC raised £1,798 through hosting a ladies’ lunch which saw almost 100 attendees dress up in their most glamorous garb and take part in activities including raffles and an auction.

A further £145 was raised for the breast screening unit through a separate raffle in support of one of the ladies’ friends who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

The £1,943 total is even more than the £1,550 the ladies raised for the breast centre through the same event last year.

The money raised will go to Victoria Breast Centre, operated by East Cheshire NHS Trust, which hopes to combine both sums with funds from the first ladies’ lunch back in 2013 to enhance its breast scanning service.

Co-organisers of the event – Macclesfield RUFC administrator Bev Roberts and club supporter Sarah Davies – presented East Cheshire NHS Trust chairman Lynn McGill and Victoria Breast Centre consultant Dr Mike Crotch-Harvey with their donation.

Sarah said: “All in all, the ladies’ lunch was a fantastic day and £1,798 was raised for a most worthy cause.

“The amount was even more than we raised last year and almost three times the amount raised at our first ladies lunch in 2013.

“We wanted to support our local breast screening unit because breast cancer is something that touches so many women – I think all of us will know someone who has been affected in some way.

“Thank you to everyone who attended and a special thank-you to the local businesses who donated some incredible prizes, along with the first-team players who gave up their time to wait tables, serve drinks and sell raffle tickets.”

East Cheshire NHS Trust chairman Lynn McGill said: “We are extremely grateful to the ladies of Macclesfield Rugby Club for their fantastic fundraising work over the last three years.

“Their donations will be put to good use by further enhancing the service we provide to local women and sometimes also male patients at the Victoria Centre.

“In addition to patients who are referred for screening to investigate any anomalies, these patients are automatically invited to an appointment once they reach the age of 50, so countless local women, and by extension their families, stand to benefit from any enhancements we are able to make to the centre.”

The Victoria Centre is located on the ground floor of New Alderley House on the Macclesfield Hospital site.
