Jack out to fire play-off pursuit
MACCLESFIELD Town have bolstered their attacking options ahead of the new National League campaign after signing striker Jack Sampson.
The 22-year-old joins from League Two side Morecambe after agreeing a one-year-deal with the Silkmen.
Sampson spent the closing stages of last season on-loan at Macclesfield, making four appearances and scoring two goals.
He is now glad to be back at the Moss Rose, and hopes next year will prove to be an extremely successful one.
“I’m delighted to join Macclesfield and I’m happy to get it over and done with as it took a few weeks to complete,” he said.
“I had a little taste of what it was like at this club last season and I would like to think I did okay while I was here.
“It was unfortunate that I got injured before a big game and missed the match with Torquay, but I’m over it now and raring to go for next year.
“I loved playing here and I was happy to get minutes under my belt and was fortunate to get a few goals, so hopefully I can carry on doing that.”
The ankle injury that Sampson suffered towards the end of last season is still bothering him now, but he insists he is nearing a return to full-fitness.
“At the moment I’m still doing my rehab as I want to make sure my ankle is okay,” he said.
“I don’t want to do anything too over the top that could set me back but I’ll be working hard and making sure I don’t take my foot off the gas.”
Sampson began his youth career with Wigan Athletic before earning his first professional contract with Bolton Wanderers.
He went on to have loan spells at Southend United and Accrington Stanley, before then joining Morecambe permanently back in 2013.
With first-team opportunities at the Shrimps limited, John Askey decided to bring Sampson to Macclesfield, and the youngster is glad to be linking back up with his new manager.
“The gaffer put his belief in me when I came to the club on-loan last season and that’s what I need right now,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to him a few times over the last few weeks and I’m looking forward to working with him again.
“Hopefully I can get a run of games in the team as that would allow me to build on each match and improve.
“It seems like John Askey is doing everything he did last year and we all know how successful a season that was.
“It was unfortunate not to get to the play-offs, but if we can be challenging for them again next season then I’ll be more than happy.”
