Silkmen miss out on Grant
MACCLESFIELD have missed out on one of their summer transfer targets after Alex Grant joined Australian side Perth Glory.
The 21-year-old spent last season on-loan with the Silkmen, and manager John Askey had hoped to make his signing a permanent one.
Grant has instead decided to join Perth though, returning to the city where he grew up as a child.
The defender made 21 appearances for Macclesfield last year, scoring twice, and he is looking forward to joining the Australian club.
“I’m really thrilled and excited to be heading back to Perth to play in the Hyundai A-League and it’s only fitting that I do it in my home town,” he said. “I’ve learnt a lot playing in England for the past five years but it’s time to change tack and push myself in the domestic league. It’s a wonderful opportunity and I’m thankful to the club for believing in me.”
Grant began his youth career with ECU Joondalup SC in Australia before signing a scholarship with Portsmouth in 2010. He went on to have loan spells at Eastleigh and Havant & Waterlooville.
He was released by Portsmouth in 2013, and snapped up Premier League side Stoke City. He didn’t make an appearance for the Potters during his time there, and ended his spell in England at the Moss Rose last season.
