Flower club marks 50 years
FORMED in 1965, the Poynton Flower Club celebrated its 50th birthday with a golden anniversary luncheon in the Balmoral Suite of the Deanwater Hotel, Woodford, on June 25.
Former chairmen, current members and friends from Disley Flower Club were among the 50 guests who attended.
The guest of honour for the event was Val Seed, chairman of the Cheshire area of the NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies), who wished the club much continued success. A display of memorabilia from the club’s archives over the years attracted much interest and stirred many pleasant memories.
There was amusement upon learning that, in its earlier years, the club met at Poynton County High School and members were required to remove their stilettoheeled shoes to avoid damage to the flooring!
Originally holding its own annual show, the club has latterly collaborated in the Poynton Show to stage the competitive floral art classes in the show’s horticulture marquee, and this year’s show, on August 29, will feature the celebratory theme.
The club meets on the third Tuesday each month in Poynton Civic Hall and will be closing its milestone year with a Christmas meeting on December 18, presented by the nationally-known flower arranging demonstrator, Jonathan Moseley, who was a judge for the recent BBC television series, The Big Allotment Challenge.
Tickets for the event will be available from the club from September onwards.
Call the current chairman, Mair Swift on 01625 875158 for further details.
