New record set by Harrington
CHESHIRE team star Mike Harrington showed his class at his Tytherington club by setting a new course record.
The plus one handicapper, who has played a big part in Cheshire’s bright start to the season that sees them currently top the Northern Counties League, posted a sevenunder par 65 and a nett score of 66 to beat the previous record over a very challenging course.
He was playing in the monthly medal that saw the ladies prize won by another Cheshire stalwart Carole Ryder with a card of 80-6-74.
More great golf at Macclesfield where their men played for the coveted Abraham Trophy.
It was won by 14-handicapper Liam Sommerton with a round of 74-14-60 for his first ‘ major’ success.
He finished six shots clear of Neil Johnson who won a cpo from Gavin Finlow.
Macc ladies enjoyed their invitation Day with the top spot going to Lady captain Jill Higgins who partnered Tytherington legend Carole Ryder to 41 points.
It left them clear of Tessa Day (Hale) and Judy Mutter 40.
Alderley Edge seniors played a singles Stableford won by C Emmott with 38 points, one clear of R Chibnall.
A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall saw Mike Gates canter to victory with 39 points, three more than Charlie Wood.
Eamon McGeady had an even more comfortable win in the battle for Shrigley’s Midsummer Cup with his huge 43-point haul seeing him four clear of Phil McCumesky, Brian Williams and Charlie Wood.
The Terry Evans Prize medal at Styal was won in style by Hilton Alexander with his neat 64 leaving him ahead of William Dodds 65 and Rick Holford and Eddie Birchenough, both 66.
A Seniors Stableford at Styal had Brian Donohue out on his own with 41 points, two more than Alan Roberts and Paul Lawday.
The latest round of Styal Ladies Summer Cup was won by Elaine Burgess after a cpo on 19 points with Pat Chadwick.
Davenport ladies played for Mr Captain’s Prize and it was won in emphatic style by Jane Bamford with 67, three less than Lynne Lea, Jillian Carswell and Janet Lee.
Singles Stableford action for Davenport’s men had Bradley Cooke winning a cpo on 38 points from Keith Graham with Glynn Roe, Andrew Pape and Mike Carswell a point off the pace.
A Midweek Stableford at Prestbury was won by Oliver James with 39 points ahead of Matthew Delany 38 and William Brough 37.
There was also a Midweek Stableford at Mottram Hall with E Gaffney first past the post with 41 points ahead of David Roberts 39 and Gary Jacques 38.
The MDLGA’s major club team knock out for the Bell Cup is gathering momentum with teams ready to play round three and reach the last eight with the ultimate aim of reaching semi- finals and finals day at Rochdale GC on September 4.
