PUPILS at Marlborough Primary School welcomed a very special visitor to their annual sports day.

Multi gold medal winning Paralympic cyclist Dame Sarah Storey popped in to hand out medals to the children and inspire them in their own sporting challenges.

Macclesfield Town Football Club manager John Askey and his assistant Efe Sodje also attended the day, which featured a host of sport events including old favourites such as the egg and spoon and sack races as well as more novel events such as throwing the nerf howler, a ball emitting a howl as it is flung as far as possible, and a speed bounce where participants bounce twofooted side to side over a wedge.

Other events included a long jump, triple jump and javelin, an obstacle course, skipping and spinning. David Hope, who teaches year five and PE, said: “It was a great day despite the pouring rain and pupils slipping over onto their bottoms. The kids responded really well and Dame Sarah was really sweet, signing a load of sports shoes and socks and handing out medals.

“The kids were quite shocked when she appeared.

“I wanted to invite sports people to get the kids excited about sport.”

The overall winner on the day was Team Ainslie, named after Olympic sailor Ben Ainslie.
