THE King’s School has revealed details of three major sets of plans to allow it to create a new single-site school.

The independent school, which currently occupies two sites in the town but wants to move to a single site in Prestbury, has published images of its proposals which will go on display at public exhibitions as part of a consultation.

The three sets of plans need to happen together to allow the school to achieve its aim of a building a new school by 2020.

It wants to close the current sites at Fence Avenue and Cumberland Street and bring together its 1,250 pupils at a new £50million school on 70 acres of green belt next to its Derby Playing Fields at Prestbury.

The school needs to sell off Fence Avenue and Cumberland Street to play for the build, so has also drawn up outline plans for new homes at the two sites. These include up to 275 homes at Fence Avenue and up to 150 at the Cumberland Street site, on the Westminster Road playing fields which form part of the campus.

The plans come despite concerns among residents over the encroachment into the green belt.

Neighbours at Fence Avenue formed a campaign group against the plans when the site was first earmarked for development in the Local Plan in 2012.

But bosses at King’s School say the sites are sustainable and will help meet demand for housing.

They will continue a series of public exhibitions on the pre-application plans this week before submitting a planning application.

Dr Hyde, headteacher, said: “All feedback will be analysed to identify common issues or concerns. These will be investigated further and, where possible, will influence the final planning applications.

“We hope to make a planning application over the summer and receive a decision from Cheshire East Council before the end of the year. After that the school hopes to be able to make a start on site at Derby Fields as soon as possible.”

The school is also consulting on what should happen to the old buildings at Cumberland Street when the site closes.

The exhibitions are at Cumberland Street today (Wednesday), Fence Avenue on Thursday, and Derby Fields Pavilion, Alderley Road on Wednesday, July 22, from 12.30pm to 7pm.
