Numbers game for the Silkmen
MACCLESFIELD Town assistant manager Efe Sodje admits the team needs to restrict themselves during pre-season due to the limited numbers they have in the squad.
The Silkmen’s prepara- tions for the new National League campaign are well under way, with several friendlies having taken place so far.
Sodje has been happy with how things have progressed, but admits the lack of players has made things difficult.
“Pre-season is all about getting the players’ games, but we can’t play too many due to the restrictions we have,” he said. “At the moment we only have 15 players so it means we can’t keep giving those players 90 minutes every game.
“We would like to give everyone at least 45 minutes but it’s tough, especially now because we picked up two more injuries against Rochdale on Saturday and it’s taken us down to 13 players.”
Macclesfield’s match with Rochdale on Saturday ended 0-0, with chances few and far between for both teams.
While that may have been the case, Sodje was very happy with what he saw from the players at the Moss Rose.
“We did fine against Rochdale and it was a good pre-season workout so it’s not a bad result,” he said.
“We always have a winning mentality here no matter how we do in friendlies, so hopefully we get some more challenges throughout pre-season.”
One played who returned to the team during the match against Rochdale was forward Jack Sampson.
The 22-year-old has suffered with injuries recently, but is now glad to be up and running.
“It was my first pre-season game so I’m very happy to get some minutes under my belt,” he said.
“I’ve been waiting a long time as it’s been three months since my last game, so playing with the lads again was great.
“I’m still not quite fully fit yet but I’m training well and enjoying myself and I’m certainly getting there.”
currently have a number of trialists in the team, and Sampson has been impressed with what he has seen.
“We’ve got some good trialists in the team at the moment and the squad is looking strong,” he said.
“We did well last season and I’m excited to see if we can do it again during the next campaign.
“I’m looking forward to getting some more minutes and I want to push myself and help the team out as much as I can.”
