NEW Macclesfield Town defender Neil Byrne is convinced that the club can go one better than last season and achieve promotion during the next campaign.

The Silkmen narrowly missed out on the play-offs after finishing one point and one place outside the top five.

Byrne believes they can do it this season though, and admits the team’s potential was a major factor in him joining.

“We are looking to push on and get in the play-offs this season. This is a team on the up and a very big club,” he said.

“I saw Macclesfield last season when they just missed out on the play-offs and they are a good organised team.

“I got the phone call off John Askey and everything he was saying to me was really what I wanted to hear.

“He told me about how they play and the organisation and plans for the season and what they want to achieve and that’s everything really I want, as everyone wants to play in the Football League.

“It was a long summer trying to get everything sorted but it feels great to get signed up and get in with the players.

“It’s good to be back full time training too as it’s a good group of lads and they’ve been great since I’ve come in.”
