Fun day for young cricketers
MACCLESFIELD Cricket Club recently organised an under 8s cricket festival at the Victoria Road ground.
Teams from Macclesfield, Christleton, Romiley, Ashley, Sandbach, Bredbury, Prestbury, Poynton, Liverpool and Brooklands entered the tournament, playing for the Peter Mannion Trophy.
Each team played to the basic rules of sixers cricket (six ball overs, six overs, six players). This was a unique chance for budding cricketers – aged six, seven and eight – to boost their skills.
The quality of the cricket from the youngsters was brilliant, with each game featuring accurate bowling, cleanly-bowled wickets, tricky catches and plenty of fours and sixes.
After almost three hours of competitive play, the rain and cold finally spoilt the tournament.
Despite this, the children thoroughly enjoyed their games, developing their skills and receiving their medals.
The event – in its second year – raises the profile of cricket, and much-needed funds for the club, plus a donation to the Bosley Disaster Fund.
Macclesfield CC hopes that both new and closer links have been established with local clubs, and plans to arrange more tournaments.
The club thanked its volunteers for their support, as well as its sponsors – Complete Money and Chrome Motors.
If you’re interested in learning about cricket and joining a team, please contact your local club and enquire into their academy.
Winter nets typically run from January to April, and summer nets from April through to the end of the summer.
