MACCLESFIELD Town midfielder Danny Whitehead believes the team is capable of becoming league champions this season.

The Silkmen narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, finishing one point and one place outside the top five.

While most of the players have set their sights on going one better this time around, Whitehead is confident the team can exceed those expectations and gain automatic promotion.

“It’s going to be a good season, just looking at how unlucky they were last year, this year we will try and get into the play-offs, if not better,” he said.

“To come in after joining, play a few games and have something work out is good, and now obviously I’m looking forward to the season.”

Whitehead joined Macclesfield earlier this summer after beginning his career with Stockport County.

His impressive form there saw him signed by Premier League side West Ham United, but things didn’t work out and he soon left the club.

After a short time with Accrington Stanley, Whitehead will now ply his trade at the Moss Rose.

“The fans are really good, and obviously when the fans like you then that’s the best thing,” he said.
