Architecture student wins prize
A FORMER Macclesfield student has been awarded a prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Alexander McDow, a Masters student at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture, has received an award for excellence.
The 28-year-old was the winner of the RIBA South Prize at Oxford Brookes.
A spokesperson for RIBA said: “The judges were impressed with Alexander’s project for Everglades National Park in Florida – the largest sub-tropical wilderness reserve on the planet which boasts diverse flora and fauna.
“Alexander proposed ways of strategically relocating and archiving the Everglades’ unique ecosystem.”
The judges of the RIBA South Prize at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture were Mark Shipton, chairman of both RIBA South Region and RIBA Oxfordshire Branch, and Dan Wadsworth of Jessop and Cook Architects.
The prize is awarded to a postgraduate student for overall excellence by the branch that represents more than 600 architects across Oxfordshire.
The prize was awarded at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture’s end of year show for students’ work.
Alexander is originally from Macclesfield and attended The King’s School in Macclesfield and Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College.
He then studied Architectural Engineering at the University of Leeds, a four-year Masters degree with an overseas exchange programme at Penn State University, Pennsylvania.
He has now completed part two of his architectural studies. Qualifying as an architect in the UK takes at least seven years.
Alexander is about to join Hawkins Brown Architects – an award winning practice in central London, whose projects include the renovation of Park Hill housing estate in Sheffield and work on London’s Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Tube stations.
He still has family living in the town.
RIBA has 40,000 members, with overseas branches in Hong Kong, the Gulf and US.
