Mu­sic tourists pull in crowds

A COM­MU­NITY band was thrilled to per­form for more than a thou­sand peo­ple dur­ing their mu­si­cal tour to Paris.

King Ed­ward Mu­si­cal So­ci­ety (KEMS) Con­cert Band per­formed two shows in France in the Jardin du Lux­em­bourg and a park be­hind Notre Dame Cathe­dral, with more than 500 peo­ple en­joy­ing each of the per­for­mances.

The band, which is in its 11th year, was in Paris for a spe­cial mu­si­cal tour and in­cluded 42 band mem­bers past and present plus friends and fam­ily.

Per­form­ing un­der the ba­ton of Ju­lia Hard­ing, who has led the band for the past two years, they per­formed hits from shows in­clud­ing Les Mis­er­ables, Phan­tom of the Opera, and Cats, jazz favourites by Glenn Miller and Duke Elling­ton, as well as clas­si­cal pieces by El­gar and Bizet.

Kate Chap­pell, who plays the sax­o­phone with the group, de­scribed the week­end as: “To­tally epic band tour of Paris this week­end play­ing fab venues!”

KEMS Con­cert Band is a com­mu­nity wind band whose mem­bers range in age from late teens to 70 and above.
