Music duo shine

Macclesfield Express - - SCHOOLS NEWS -

TWO hugely talented King’s Girls’ Division musicians have played with top concert performers in a summer of success for the school’s young artistes.

King’s jazz saxophonist, flautist and pianist Alex Clarke played with multi award-winning jazz star Amy Roberts and her quintet at the 2015 Pershore Jazz Festival.

Alex, 15, met the charismatic performer backstage after a gig at Bollington Arts Centre and was invited to guest with her at Pershore. She was also encouraged to apply and successfully audition for a place at the National Youth Jazz Collective’s summer school, held in August at Uppingham School.

Alex, who practises for two hours each day, said: “It was the most exciting and rewarding performance opportunity I could possibly have hoped for.

“Amy is something of a musical hero to me and to perform on stage with her was amazing.

“I am in awe of her ability and really respect her musical style, plus she is just such a lovely person too.”

Violinist Georgina Bloomfield, who at just 12 is one of the best young musicians King’s Girls’ Division’s music teacher Jo Beesley has ever heard, played a concert this summer with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain with Nicola Benedetti at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.

This will be repeated more locally on September 22 at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

Georgina achieved a distinction at grade 8 in her violin, remarkably scoring 145 out of 150 in her examination.

Jo Beesley said: “You need to score 130 to get a distinction which is quite rare; 140 is astonishing and frankly 145 is simply off the scale.

“I have never ever known anyone achieve that before and all from such a sunny lovely girl who is a joy to teach.”

Both girls ultimately want to go the Royal Northern College of Music and both would like careers in music, Alex preferring the jazz style and Georgina with more of a leaning to classical music.

Mrs Beesley added: “Both young women are simply quite exceptional and will be the envy of thousands of much older musicians to have played at such a young age with such accomplished professional performers on the world stage.”
