Plea for donors to help save transplant lives
FAMILIES in Macclesfield are being urged to sign up to the Organ Donor Register to reduce the number who die waiting for a transplant.
Figures show that 57 people in Cheshire have died in the last five years, while 170 more are on the waiting list.
Last year 22-year-old mum Naomi Hulme from Macclesfield died while waiting for a double lung transplant.
Now as part of National Transplant Week, which runs from September 7-11, East Cheshire NHS Trust, which runs Macclesfield Hospital, are aiming to raise awareness of organ donation.
Staff and volunteers will be running promotional stands at the hospital to sign up the Organ Donor Register and tell their families about their wishes.
Visitors will be able to sign up on the spot using a tablet device.
They will be joined by Karen Wolfenden, whose six-year-old daughter Ellie-Mae’s life was saved thanks to a man who donated his organs after death.
Karen, from Tytherington, will explain first-hand how organ donation affected her family.
She said: “My daughter Ellie-Mae had a life-saving liver transplant just days after her first birthday.
“Nearly six years on she has just taken part in her fourth British Transplant Games, something we never thought we would get to see.
“Without the kindness of both her donor and his family she simply would not be here today.
“One in three people die while waiting for a donor. It doesn’t have to be this way with your help.
“Please consider being listed on the Organ Donor Register and tell your next of kin of your wishes.
“Telling your nearest and dearest is important too so they fully understand and honour your intentions if the time came to donate.”
In July, Naomi Hulme’s mum Jackie backed calls for more people to become donors.
Jackie said: “It’s a big thing when you become a donor. You feel good that you are going to do some good for somebody and help save lives.”
Dr John Hunter, medical director and clinical lead for organ donation, said: “Every single donor is precious as they can save or transform the lives of up to nine people and help many more through also donating their tissues such as skin, corneas and tendons.”
