Husband and wife team up to pedal miles for challenge
A HUSBAND and wife took part in a sponsored cyclathon to raise awareness of the benefits of regular exercise for older people.
Alan and Dorothy Coley, who are both 82, visit the exercise studio at their home at Belong Macclesfield twice a week.
The regular trip has helped Alan to cope with his arthritis and Dorothy, who lives with dementia, to remain mobile, going on walks from the care home on Kennedy Avenue.
The Coleys were two of a number of residents at Belong Macclesfield and its sister care home in Warrington who took on a 140-mile joint cyclathon, covering the distance on exercise bikes.
Staff also got in on the action by enjoying a spin on the bikes, including fitness instructor Barbara Tait and her counterpart at Warrington, Aaron Williams.
Barbara runs the Belong care village exercise studio which is fitted with specialist gym equipment.
She said her role at the care home is to support people to live well through exercise, giving residents a greater degree of control over their lives.
Barbara added: “We all enjoyed our trip over to Belong Warrington, and it was great to see its residents making good use of the village facilities.
“After all, staying fit and active is a key part of maintaining a happy, healthy lifestyle, especially as we get older.”
Proven benefits of regular exercise include decreasing stiffness and pain, lower blood pressure, improved memory, sleep patterns and mood.
Regular exercise has also been proven to delay the onset of dementia.
Alan Coley said: “Living at Belong has enabled me and my wife to continue leading the kind of independent, active lifestyle we both enjoy, whilst receiving all the care and support we need.
“The cycle event was really fun, and another great opportunity for me and Dorothy to take part in something active together.”
Belong, which specialises in supporting people with dementia, is a charity and part of the CLS Group.
