●● THE Friends of Bollington Towpath will meet again this weekend to tidy up vegetation and improve the path.
Volunteers work closely with the Canal and Rivers Trust to improve the towpath and carry out a range of other tasks to keep it clear for walkers.
Recent work has included making safe and reopening the steps from the towpath at the Hurst Lane Bridge, repairing a damaged handrail and installing a new bench on the towpath near the top of Hurst Lane. They tidied the overgrown vegetation and improved the walking surface all the way along to Hawthorn Road and because of their input the Canal and Rivers Trust has also done maintenance work.
The volunteers usually work on the second Sunday of every month.
The next meeting is on Sunday, September 13, at 9.45am at the top of Hawthorn Road.
Everyone is welcome. Please wear heavy shoes or boots. For more information contact Ian or Mandi on 01625 260159.
The Canal and Rivers Trust provide all the materials and expert assistance.
Efforts to maintain the path helped Macclesfield Canal become the first ever canal to be awarded Keep Britain Tidy’s coveted Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality green space.
