As­bestos re­moval shuts shop

THE Tesco Metro store in Mac­cles­field town cen­tre has closed while as­bestos is re­moved.

The Ex­change Street store closed on Sun­day and will re-open on Novem­ber 26 af­ter a gen­eral re­fur­bish­ment.

A spokesman from the store said: “Es­sen­tial main­te­nance to re­move low risk as­bestos will also take place and the cash ma­chine will be switched off as the power sup­ply to the build­ing is turned off.”

Cheshire East Coun­cil said they had been con­sulted over pre­vi­ous works in the Mac­cles­field Tesco store on ma­te­ri­als pos­si­bly con­tain­ing as­bestos.

A coun­cil spokesman said: “The work was car­ried out in ac­cor­dance with laid down pro­ce­dures to safe­guard staff and mem­bers of the public.

“The com­pany has been in­formed that in the event of any fur­ther work in­volv­ing as­bestos ma­te­rial or sus­pected as­bestos, the lo­cal au­thor­ity or the Health and Safety Ex­ec­u­tive may need to be no­ti­fied.”
