Green award for furniture scheme
A FURNITURE reuse scheme has won a major green award in recognition of the help it gives to families in need.
Last year 13,000 households across the borough and neighbouring Cheshire West and Chester benefited from the work of The Cheshire East Furniture Reuse Forum (CFRF), which collects unwanted furniture and appliances and sells them on at low cost.
Staff and volunteers at the forum collected 600 tonnes of items in 2014, and their efforts have earned them a prestigious Green Apple Environment Award, which will be presented at a special ceremony at the Houses of Parliament.
Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones said: “The forum is to be congratulated on this fantastic achievement. It is a little-known organisation that carries out a very valuable service in our communities and should be supported at every opportunity.”
Reuse schemes also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites and create employment, volunteering and training opportunities.
The CFRF offers a free collection service. For information go to cfrf.org. uk or email:naomi@cfrf. org.uk.
