Parents in school parking row
COUNCIL chiefs have defended their decision to ticket ‘selfish’ parents parking illegally outside a primary school.
Cheshire East Council launched a crackdown outside Park Royal Primary School on Lyon Street after complaints from residents.
But parents have hit back claiming that renovation works at the school have increased parking problems in the area.
The school claims it has done everything it can to help parents as it undergoes its £2.5m refit which is expected to last until spring.
Parents contacted the Express complaining that traffic wardens had been dishing out dozens of tickets in the week running up to half-term.
Kris Smith said: “The school is under going a refurbishment programme which has left an already bad parking arrangement an extremely bad parking arrangement. The single yellow line adjacent to the school is the only viable option for the parents of a school with over 300 pupils and no car park.
“Traffic wardens have been up and down that road ticketing at will and without prejudice. “This is a disgrace.” Steph Dorman Hardy called for the council to ‘lay off’ fining motorists until construction work has be completed.
Ian Aldous, a school governor, said the school had done everything it could to help parents and staff during the works, adding: “We are a town centre school. Parking is always an issue. We have sent a message to parents asking them to be respectful to residents if they park in the area.”
Councillor Les Gilbert, cabinet member for communities, said: “The council’s main focus remains the safety of all road users, in particular children, and ensuring we keep traffic moving.
“The council continues to work with police on the issue of inappropriate parking outside the school during pick up and drop offs.
“We are taking positive action against those that continue to park selfishly. However, our initial approach remains the education of the public.”
