Art of keeping people warm

Macclesfield Express - - MACCLESFIELD PEOPLE -

Name: Ruth Denise Lear. What do you do?: I design and paint silk scarves and also paint watercolour and ink greeting cards, as well as working at Macclesfield Museums part time. What is the best thing about Macclesfield?: I love the fact that the town is surrounded by the beautiful hills. When I have been away, it’s always good to see them again. What is the worst thing about Macclesfield?: Empty shops and derelict buildings that have just been left for years. Where is your favourite place in Macclesfield?: Up in the hills! However, I do have a soft spot for West Park Museum, not just because I work there, but Marianne Brocklehurst who instigated the building, did it for all the people of Macclesfield to enjoy. The building itself is a beautiful design and inside there is a frieze which is a copy of the Elgin Marbles. How long have you been an artist?: I think I would have to say since I started to draw, it was what I always wanted to do. Any subject at school became an art lesson. I have always made cards for family and friends and then when I was a young mum, I worked from home selling cards to help pay the bills. What do you enjoy most about doing this?: I particularly love silk painting, as every scarf is unique, and because of the nature of painting on silk, you never quite know exactly how it will turn out. Each one is like a wearable piece of art, so I am thrilled to see people wearing them. Who are your main artistic influences?: Oh my goodness, so many people! I suppose I am particularly drawn to illustration, I think one of my first influences may have been Beatrix Potter. I loved the little story books and looked at those illustrations so many times. What’s the funniest or most memorable thing that’s happened while you’ve been doing an artwork?: I did have a disaster whilst trying to finish a scarf before I was due in at work. The frame that I use is very long and a bit cumbersome, and I suddenly realised that I had knocked over a whole bottle of black silk paint! It literally went everywhere, all over the floor, the walls, me... arrrgh! I had only minutes to clean up. Stressful at the time but funny now I look back.

If you could produce an

artwork for anyone?:
