Grounds for improvement at Langley
LANGLEY Cricket Club are undergoing major ground works during the close season.
Having secured a total of £80,000 in grant funding, £65,000 from the Sport England Protecting Playing Fields programme and £15,000 from the WREN FCC Community Action Fund, the club has been able to professionally renovate the playing area, install a new ground drainage system and implement an ongoing two-year maintenance programme.
The works have been carried out by Cheshire based contractor Souter Sports under the management supervision of Professional Sportsturf Design (PSD) NW Limited.
Mark Higgs, Project Manager for Souter Sports commented: “We have carried out minor levelling works to the square to improve the overall surface and eradicate existing undulations, along with the extensive installation of both a primary piped drainage system and a secondary slit drain scheme over the outfield to assist in significant improvements in surface drainage. This will hopefully reduce the number of fixtures lost due to inclement weather during the playing season.
“We also managed to use some of the slit drain arisings to fill a hollow on an area of the outfield improving the surface levels from a players perspective. An irrigation tank and pump assembly has also been fitted allowing watering of the square through and quick coupler attachment close by.
“We hope that we have met the expectation of the club and that the facility enables the club to fulfil their fixtures along with the growth, development and success of Langley CC for the future.”
Langley CC Grants Officer Matt Stevens added: “The works will make a huge difference to our club.
“Not only will we have a much improved playing surface, our outfield will now be able to cope with adverse weather conditions, with cancelled games costing the club significant and essential funds year in year out.
“In line with our club development plan, we have engaged with local primary schools and the Scouts and will look to broaden our provision for recreational activities for those groups and more over the next few years.
“I would like to sincerely thank Sport England, WREN, PSD and Souter Sports for their shared vision and fantastic support of our great club.”
