Mr Macclesfield brings up 200 milestone

Macclesfield Express - - SPORT - ALEX HANNAH

MACCLESFIELD’S game against Harrogate marked a milestone for hooker Sam Moss, also known as Mr Macclesfield.

Sam joined Macclesfield Rugby Club as a youngster and went through the age groups, and now has made 200 league appearances for the club, which is both testament to the man himself, and the club’s thriving mini/junior section that has recently featured on ITV news.

The Blues hooker, who has recently started his own business, SJM Carpentry and Joinery made his national league debut for The Blues back in 2007 against Beverley, Sam went on to make himself one of the first names on the team sheet, and is still an ever present in The Blues line up.

Head coach Giles Heagerty was first to sing Sam’s praises and believes he has the model attitude for any rugby player, part time or pro.

“Its an unbelievable achievement to get 200 appearances at hooker. He works his socks off and is tireless, he’s the first through the wall every week.

“It’s unreal. Sam always demands more from himself and he demands more from the people around him, that’s what you want.

“A lot has been made about culture within rugby, this is the culture you want, you want players like Sam. He rarely says much but he always manages to lift things around him.”

Chairman Peter Harper also speaks very highly of Sam, but also says it’s a wonderful achievement for the club to see one of it’s mini/junior players go on and make so many appearances for the first team, including being part of two, National Two title winning squads.

“Two hundred appearances in national league rugby is incredible and even more impressive from the front row.

“Sam has really put his marker down this season, two good hookers have come into the club, but he’s worked hard to make sure the starting first team jersey is still his own. His lineout is incredible and defence fantastic.

“Sam has come through the minis and juniors, he’s a Macc lad born and bred so it makes it a little more special that he’s got that achievement.”

Sam will make it 201 this Saturday against Leicester Lions at Priory Park as The Blues look to make it 10 from 10 and maintain their 100% home record this season.

He expects it to be a tough game, and admitted the most important thing was a win, not his personal achievement!

“Today was all about getting the win, it’s a tough place to come. I didn’t realise that my 200th was today but obviously I’m very pleased to do it for my childhood club.

“We go on to next week and know we need another win, it’ll be tough and they’re a good side, but we know what we’ve got to do.”
