Blues extend lead at top of the table

Macclesfield Express - - SPORT - NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO

SAM Moss’ 200th National League appearance was made all the sweeter as The Blues kept their good run going with a very hard fought victory away at Harrogate.

The Blues failed to get a try scoring bonus point for just the second time this season as they ground out victory.

The Blues got off to a flyer, with Rhodri Mayor scoring within the first two minutes after the pack secured great line out ball for the backs to use.

The try scorer was sent to the bin shortly after however as the blues were reduced to 14, The Macc defence held out for the ten-minute period however despite a ruthless onslaught from the Harrogate attack.

The Blues added another try on the half hour mark, some fine work from fly half Lewis Barker put Elliot Brierley in to keep up his 100 per cent scoring record this season.

Harrogate then got themselves back in to the game as they fed off of a Macclesfield error. A fine kick in behind looked to have been covered by Mayor, but the bounce of the ball unsettle the winger and Harrogate had their score, The Blues went in at the break 7-12 up.

Three minutes into the second half Harrogate took the lead, a converted score once again off the back of a blues mistake gave the home side a 2 point lead.

The lead was short lived though, as the Macc pack turned the screw on the Harrogate line, the defence committed an offence and the referee had no option but to reward the penalty try, Lewis Barker added the conversion to stretch The Blues lead.

On 56 minutes the hosts once again fell foul of the referee’s whistle. The penalty was within Barker’s range and the fly half took his opportunity as he so often does from the tee to put Macclesfield two scores ahead.

Harrogate made it a tight affair with eight minutes to play as they added a penalty to go within five points.

The Blues’ stern defence withstood the late ‘Gate barrage though and held out for the win.

The Blues’ win became all the more important after full time after news got round that both Caldy and Sedgely Park slipped up to give Macc a six point cushion at the top.
