Top gross prize for Gardner
MATT Gardner from Prestbury recorded the lowest round of the day at the American Golf National Junior Championship Final, winning the prize for best gross score. The event took place at PING’s Headquarters at the Gainsborough Golf Club in Lincolnshire.
More than 400 young golfers entered the six American Golf Junior Championship qualifying events held across the UK and Ireland this summer.
Matt, who is a member at Prestbury Golf Club was one of just 36 golfers to qualify for the Final, where inaugural reigning Champion, 17 year old Paul Marshall from Sale, defended his title.
Matt, 16, who plays off five, narrowly beat the field coming home nine over par in challenging conditions. As well as the title and trophy, Matt also won a G30 Driver courtesy of event sponsor PING. Matt acknowledged the importance of events such as the American Golf Junior Championship in helping more youngsters enter the game.
“I would like to thank all of the organisers for putting on a fantastic tournament experience and helping to promote the wider development of Junior golf. The Final was thoroughly enjoyable. I really felt like an important player coming down the stretch with cameras focused in on me. Winning the Gross Prize will increase my confidence and aid my improvement as a golfer.”
“We have thoroughly enjoyed hosting such an exceptional group of youngsters here at Gainsborough and congratulate Matt on his prize winning score,” said Daniel Gathercole, Head of Marketing at American Golf. “We never fail to be impressed not just by the standard of the players, but also by their great attitudes, good nature and the sportsmanship shown by every single participant.”
