The six-month lease is now up and my son has moved out, but the land­lord re­fuses to re­turn the de­posit. He says the car­pets and cur­tains needed clean­ing, al­though this hasn’t been done. AS­SUM­ING that your son was an “as­sured short­hold ten­ant” his de­posit should have been pro­tected by his land­lord in a gov­ern­ment-backed scheme. He should have been no­ti­fied which scheme was in­volved within 30 days of mov­ing in. If the land­lord knew the de­posit came from you, you should have been served with this in­for­ma­tion as well.
