Bogus caller ‘claims to be from town council’

A WARNING went out to residents after reports of a bogus caller claiming to be from Macclesfield Town Council.

The clerk for the town council and officers from Cheshire East’s trading standards department put out a warning after reports of residents receiving phone calls from a man claiming to be from the town council.

Coun Les Gilbert, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for communities, said: “The customer service centre received a small number of calls from members of the public saying they had received a suspicious phone call from a man claiming to be from Macclesfield Town Council.

“The calls claimed to relate to a personal injury claim for an accident. On each occasion he hung up when questioned by the person receiving the call.

“These calls are bogus and no one from Macclesfield Town Council or any other local authority would cold call the public about such an issue.

“Our advice to the public who receive such a call is to hang up.

“It’s particularly concerning that someone is impersonating a local authority member of staff.”
