Pupils come knocking to warn on doorstep safety

- EMILY MURRAY

PRIMARY school children have joined a campaign to educate youngsters about the dangers of doorstep callers.

Students at Bollington Cross Primary School, Chelford Primary School, Dean Valley Community Primary School and Lostock Hall Primary School were among 25 schools to take part in Cheshire East Council’s annual ‘ knock knock’ campaign.

Children were encouraged to create artwork carrying important messages about doorstep safety, including instructing children to keep doors and windows locked and be aware of bogus callers.

More than 240 year five and six pupils submitted their designs to the council and 36 were chosen to form a 2016 calendar.

All pupils who entered received their own calen- dar and the winners received a certificate and water bottle.

Winners from Macclesfield, Poynton and Bollington included Summer Williams and Imogen Pemberton from Bollington Cross Primary School, Natasha Shepley and Rose Mendham from Chelford CE Primary School, Paddy Watts, Millie Gardiner and Sacha Hancock from Dean Valley Community Primary School and Zara Farooq from Lostock Hall Primary School.

Councillor Les Gilbert, who judged the competition, said: “Once again standards were very high and the task of judging the best entries was extremely challenging.

“As a council, we have been running this campaign for five years now and it is clear that it is extremely effective in getting important personal safety messages across to people young and old.”
