Staff trek 13 miles to get to work on time

Macclesfield Express - - CHARITY ROUND-UP -

A TEAM of building society workers took on a commute with a difference to raise money for charity.

A team of employees from Leek United trekked 13 miles before breakfast, setting off in darkness from Macclesfield at 4am.

Led by their branch manager Richard Czapski, the staff from the building society’s Leek office managed to arrive in time to begin a full day’s work at 9am.

The team’s efforts raised cash for Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, and will allow the charity, which provides care and support for terminally ill children and their families, to purchase 20 art sets to be used for children’s art therapy.

Richard said: “Our target is to raise £500.

“We’ve got just over £300 at the moment, so if anyone is still thinking of making a donation to this very worthy cause, it would be much appreciated.”

The walk from Macclesfield was done mainly in darkness and the group, made up of Richard, Alex Beachell, Elly Haverty-Williams, Julie Collins and Jeanette Mountford, donned waterproof and highvisibility clothing and boots, and armed themselves with torches on the route, which took them along canal towpaths.

They have calculated that they took approximately 31,900 steps to cover the distance in four hours and 45 minutes, burning a total of 3,000 calories in the process.

Richard said: “It took us nearly an hour just to get out of Macclesfield because we kept stopping for so many photographs, but we made it to our branch in time, and put some of the calories back on with bacon sandwiches before starting work!”

Art plays a fundamental role in the care provided by the Donna Louise Hospice, which is based in Stoke-onTrent, for many of the families who use its services.

A spokesman for the hospice explained: “Art therapy is just one of many forms of counselling which we offer, and gives our families a creative avenue to express their emotions which can at times be easier to display on paper rather than formulate into words.”
