Holiday drama scheme is a success with primary pupils
PRESTBURY Primary School pupils were stars for the day when they performed classic fairytale Snow White.
The performance was the culmination of a new holiday drama scheme run by Claire Beresford, a former teacher at the school.
The show was one of many planned by the drama enthusiast, who now runs her own company, Wassadamo, which is an acronym of a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest: ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on’.
She said: “I was really proud of all the pupils and they were all very proud of themselves.
“My magic moments have been seeing their confidence grow.”
She added: “The audience were all family and friends and very supportive. The response was wonderful for the children.”
Claire’s own family stepped in to help too, with son Jacob, 13, and daughter Eliza, 18, playing the roles of prince and narrator. Eliza, a pupil at Fallibroome sixth form, also lent a hand with the directing and choreographing, along with A-level dance pupil Sam Ashall.
The small cast of pupils doubled up as more than one character and musician Ben Beer provided the music, with Matilda Beattie, who played Snow White, performing her own solo.
The performance also kept Claire on her toes when the queen, played by Maisie Jones , forgot her ‘heart’ at a crucial moment.
Claire said: “The queen forgot her ‘heart’ aka a red pepper and was taken aback when she had to say ‘ behold her heart’ and hold her hand up. I called out... Where is it? And she found it.”
Claire also stepped in swiftly to protect the queen’s modesty. She laughed: “At one point after a change, Maisie came back on with her queens dress tucked right up at the back and I had to reach up and pull it down.”
At the end of the show Claire’s son Jacob gave each of his leading ladies a red rose and chocolate, along with certificates for outstanding performance.
The group then did a second performance for the whole school.
Beauty and the Beast is the next show on the agenda at half-term, with the next holiday scheme at the school also taking place then, working towards ‘All about Matilda’, a show with an original script.
Claire will also begin a drama group at Fallibroome High School after half-term on Monday evenings ahead of a performance of Oliver there. She said: “It’s all very exciting!”
