Painter’s tribute to iconic snap
AN ARTIST recreated a now infamous snap of New Year debauchery on the streets of Manchester.
Nic Stacey, 29, from Bollington has created his own tribute to the photo taken by photographer Joel Goodman outside the city centre’s Printworks entertainment complex on New Year’s Eve showing police officers restraining a man in the middle of the road, while another chap reaches for a beer as he lies in the street.
The picture became an internet hit, with thousands of people sharing the image and news outlets across the country scrambling to get their hands on the picture. It was even compared to a piece of Renaissance art.
Nic specialises in pictures of Manchester and was inspired by Joel’s iconic snap.
He decided to turn the photo into a painting, painstakingly recreating the image in acrylic on a giant three by four foot canvas.
Nic said: “Occasionally a picture will come along that really captures my attention. Joel’s definitely did that.
“As soon as I saw the picture, I got to work. I saw the picture very early on New Year’s Day. I just thought it was hilarious - it was so Manchester.
“Everything about it was perfect. It reminded me of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, in that everything was just so well-placed.
“People later said it looks like Renaissance art, which I could totally see. I couldn’t stop laughing, it was brilliant.
“I’d found a huge canvas in a skip a few months ago, but had no inspiration for what to paint on it. When I saw Joel’s photo, I knew.”
From every painting Nic sells, he donates 25pc to George House Trust, a HIV charity in Manchester.
Nic added: “I’m not sure whether my latest piece will sell and to be honest, I’d quite like it in my living room. But if it does, let’s hope that some of what it makes can go to a good cause.”
Joel said his work being compared to Renaissance art was ‘flattering’ but he was just ‘in the right place at the right time’.
He said: “I’m really flattered and respectful of what Nic’s done and of his motives and generosity. I really hope it sells and I’ll gladly donate a framed and signed version of a print of my photograph to George House Trust for auction.”
