Askey’s Wembley wish for Silkmen

Macclesfield Express - - SPORT - SHELDAN KEAY

MANAGER John Askey was dreaming of a match at Wembley ahead of their FA Trophy replay with Truro City.

The Silkmen were set to host Truro at the Moss Rose as the Express went to print on Tuesday, with a match against Torquay in the last 16 of the competition up for grabs for the winner.

Saturday’s tie between the two teams finished 2-2, with Isaac Vassell scoring an 88th minute equaliser for Truro to earn them the replay.

Ollie Knowles had initially put them ahead, before Macc temporarily turned things around thanks to goals from Kristian Dennis and Rhys Turner.

A return match was needed though to determine who would progress, and Askey was planning on going all the way in the competition.

“Everybody dreams of running out at Wembley and at this level the FA Trophy is the biggest cup competition,” he said.

“The closer you get to the final the more interested you get, and we’ll be trying our best to keep progressing and win it.”

Meanwhile, Macclesfield’s Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Cammell Laird has been re-arranged, with the two teams now set to meet on Tuesday 26 January after the original date was postponed.
