Call for lessons to be learnt

Macclesfield Express - - GROSVENOR CENTRE ROW -

A DISABILITY charity said lessons must be learned from the fire safety ban.

Laura Smith, chief officer at Disability Information Bureau, said its Pierce Street office in Macclesfield had been inundated with calls and visits from disabled people.

She said: “As soon as the problem emerged we had complaints from people with various disabilities about the staff preventing them from accessing the shopping centre.

“There is clearly some equality and diversity training needed by front-line staff at the Grosvenor over how to handle people with disabilities.

“I’m relieved the centre will be reopened for all, but lessons must be learned.

“There is a sense that this has been handled shockingly badly by all parties. A lot of questions remain over how the problem came about and we will be asking these directly to the fire authority.”
