Name: Cath MacKellar. Which organisation are you involved with?: Speaking Up Speaking Out, a charity which works with and for adults with learning disabilities and additional needs. What does the organisation do?: It runs a ‘dropin’ called Parachute on Old Park Lane which is a lively, welcoming and friendly place and where the barriers of learning disabilities are left at the door. All of our ‘dropper inners’ and carers are valued and we provide a place where friends are made and a range of activities are on offer such as arts, crafts and computers. How did you become a volunteer?: I met Karen, who started the charity, last year fundraising on a very cold winter’s day in Macclesfield along with some of the ‘dropper inners’. I was impressed with their friendliness, open attitude and what they were trying very hard to achieve. I had some spare hours and thought I would like to support the organisation. Which projects have you been involved with recently?: I have been involved with the fundraising ball held last November but we are looking forward to ‘Fundraising February’ with the ‘dropper inners’ keen to help raise money for the drop-in. We will be running a Valentine’s hamper raffle in the Grosvenor Centre on Tuesday, February 9, and Thursday, February 11 – come and say hello! We are also holding an open day on Thursday, February 18, at the Drop-In, a stall on the Treacle Market and a couple of street collections towards the end of February. What do you enjoy most about doing this?: Being part of a friendly, happy team where ‘dropper inners’, staff and volunteers are welcomed, appreciated and valued. What is your favourite place in Macclesfield?: Tegg’s Nose. Ideally how would you spend every day?: Out walking the wonderful countryside surrounding Macclesfield. What was the best holiday you have been on?: Cycling in France. If money were no object what would you do?: See Parachute have a permanent future. What one piece of advice would you give?: Be true to yourself. What was your first job?: Kitchen assistant. What is on your CD/ MP3?: Wide mix of old and new. What is your favourite TV show?: The Bridge. What are you reading at the moment?: Village Secrets by Caroline Moorehead. What is your biggest inspiration?: The belief that a small contribution can help to make a big difference.
